IF YOU THOUGHT FLAPPETS WAS ROUGH...
...HOW ABOUT AT NIGHT!!!!
yep me and jim (not a forum member yet) are going up to flappets at night when my land rover is sorted (bookies seem to have december 2009 as the favorite )
Doing this gives many advantages...
* Added exitement of off roading in the dark
* No nobs on trail bikes attempting the tripple loop the loop through a burning hoop
* Free's up valuble sunday time which can then be used to fix the things you broke in the dark (jap owners must just get bored on sundays)
* People might actually get to use the 10 600w lamps they fitted to the top of their truck
* could call in at the pub afterwards (although dont drink and drive kids)
Disadvantages...
* One of us will probably die (hey im a realist )
* After total electrical failure i would say remaining survival time is less than 10 minuits
* No fried food snacks from 'marys munch-box' (but hey who wants to eat from marys munch box anyway???)
* Not sure if the air ambulance flys at night
Im not expacting anyone exept me and jim to actually volunteer for this, but you never know.
Hopefully doing it in the dark will stop us going a little out of our depth like we normally do lol.

Okay being one of the "chaps" who has driven off road in the dark its a lot worse than you think.
When it day light you can see the road/track ahead aand plan what you are going to do however when its darker than dark you just have to hope for the best.
What i suggest first as a taster and because you would not catch me dead at the flappits in the hours of darkness we go over holmfirth when dark you will be supprised how scary it is.
BTW have you managed to get that truck up and running yet?

Re: IF YOU THOUGHT FLAPPETS WAS ROUGH...
ive done loads of farm tracks at night and stuff but never any real off roading, my first mistake i made last year thinking 'dunno why people moan about landy headlights they seem fine to me' untill we started going out on the moors in the dark and you realise that you are in the middle of a field and you have no idea where the gate is and you can only see 30 feet in front lol. oh and my mate kept saying 'theres a bog up ahead you will get stuck if you slow down go faster', in the end we were doing about 35mph and this bog had dried into a solid hole in the ground, so we both hit out heads on the rood, landy did a dukes of hazzard jump, hi lift fell out the back, spare wheel landed on the bonnet. fun though.
Worst case scenario is we go up there, find its rock hard as it probably is, and just drive about on the easy bits and open spaces. i know the place pretty well but only in the day.
Used to go out on rough tracks on the bike at night and on the tracks you knew well you could still do a good 30mph which was a great adrenalin rush lol.
